Artist Statement
Jamie is a Canadian landscape painter interested in developing a visual vocabulary that strikes a balance between efficiency and accuracy that will engage people’s relationship with the landscape. His practice is fueled by a passion for the landscape and executed with the unique perspective of a former landscape architect. Educated in ecology and landscape architecture, Jamie has an academic appreciation for the multi-faceted value of the landscape – ecological, cultural and spiritual – and his challenge is to reduce the amount of information to the point at which the viewer experiences the landscape in a meaningful way.
Arranging foreground elements to provide strategic entry into the depth of the landscape beyond, Jamie’s paintings invite the viewer to enter into the space. Vivid color and key details are captured to create an experience not far removed from actually being in the landscape. A painting is successful when it generates an emotional response in the viewer triggering a memory or awakening an appreciation for the landscape.
